I try to cultivate musical environments where people can escape the day-to-day realities of life
— rhubiqs

rhubiqs is the solo project of London-based composer and sound designer Tom Squires. Known for creating emotive and ethereal soundscapes, Tom not only releases ambient music but also performs it live, bringing his immersive sound environments to the stage and offering audiences a space to pause and reflect.

He started making ambient music around 2018, but the path there wasn’t something he planned. Before that, he was part of a post-rock band where his role was focused on production, electronics, samples, and synths. Because of that, he naturally leaned toward making drawn-out, atmospheric sounds. Over time, he found himself more and more interested in the sound design and composition side of things, and gradually began making more solo music. Ambient music became a natural home for that creative output—one that he feels really comfortable and happy in.

Growing up as a teenager in the late 90s and early 2000s, Tom listened to a lot of skater punk, emo, and pop punk. While it might not be the most expected influence for an ambient artist, those early music experiences still play a role in how he connects emotionally to sound and expression.

For Tom, one of the best things about being an independent artist today is having full creative control. Being able to make every artistic decision himself means the music stays honest and personal. Through rhubiqs, he hopes to create emotive and contemplative spaces where people can unwind. He tries to build musical environments that offer a bit of escape—from day-to-day realities, smartphones, social media, and the constant buzz of the 24/7 news cycle.

Outside of music, Tom has a passion for running. He once finished 199th out of 56,000 participants in the London Marathon, something he’s quietly very proud of.
