Philippe Deschamps
“Music is a necessity. I need to write and record what I’m singing inside.”
Philippe Deschamps is a composer and sound artist from Paris, France. His ambient music blends ethereal textures, suspended melodies and vaporous atmospheres, often shaped around neoclassical harmonies and subtle, ever-shifting soundscapes. Carefully crafted in his Paris studio his music invites deep listening and quiet introspection, offering a gentle space for contemplation and dreaming.
Philippe’s relationship with music began early. When he was five years old, he heard Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavierin a friend of his father’s car. Time seemed to freeze, and something clicked, a lifelong search in sound had begun. He studied classical piano as a child, and later trained in baroque singing as a countertenor. But it was during his teenage years, playing bass and guitar in rock and post-rock bands, that he realized music would always be a central part of his life. After studying sound at film school, he worked as a sound editor and began writing film scores, some of which already contained traces of the ambient language he would later explore more fully.
Philippe started releasing ambient music in 2022. For him, the genre offers a sense of freedom and endless possibility: any instrument can become part of the sound - piano, electric guitar, voice, wind, silence. His music draws inspiration from astrophysics, the movement of clouds, light on water, poetry, and colors. Each composition is a way to record what he hears and feels internally, something he describes as a necessity.
He hopes that listeners experience his music as a kind of escape, a visit to a place that doesn’t exist, or the memory of a place once deeply loved.
Outside of music, Philippe is a passionate jazz fan and a regular at acoustic concerts in Paris. He’s a great admirer of artists like John Coltrane and Bill Evans, and a longtime reader of Philippe Jaccottet’s poetry. Despite his classical background, it’s the studio and the creative process of production that feels like home.
