David McLaughlin

David is a multi-instrumentalist based in San Diego, United States, who makes music as Solar Sleeper. His music brings together piano, electronic sounds, and recordings from the world around him.

He first learned piano as a child, but it was a guitar class in high school that sparked his love of writing songs. Around the same time, a friend introduced him to the band Explosions in the Sky, describing their sound simply as “beautiful music.” David began to discover how music could tell a story without words. After years of listening to post-rock and playing in a band, he found his way to quieter music and began releasing his own piano pieces as Solar Sleeper.

Another turning point came when a friend shared Jon Hopkins’ album Music for Psychedelic Therapy. Hearing how it brought together electronic sounds and recordings from the outside world encouraged David to explore more of both in his own work. He wants his music to offer something to spend time with and listen closely to, while leaving room for the listener’s own thoughts and feelings.

David writes mostly by feeling, following an idea wherever it takes him. Inspiration might come from a film, a museum visit, or a conversation that changes how he sees things. Often, the music helps him work through something before he fully understands it. As songs come together, their shared meaning begins to emerge.

Outside music, David works as a software developer. He enjoys playing chess with friends, making visual art through code, and reading old science-fiction books.

David McLaughlin

“A lot of my music starts out as the first expression of something I’m processing internally.”
